Most babies have more toys than shelf space by their first birthday. If you’re a grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend shopping for a first birthday or Christmas, and want something that won’t end up at the bottom of the toy bin, mealtime gear is a smart bet: a 1-year-old eats several times a day, and every meal is messy. (Parents making their own purees may also like our Baby Brezza vs Beaba Babycook Neo comparison.)
We built this list from manufacturer specs and federal safety guidance, not by testing the products ourselves. Before you buy, ask the parents what they already have and what their high chair tray looks like.

Everyday mealtime gifts (smaller gifts)
Bumkins Sleeved Bib: best small gift
Best for: babies and toddlers who insist on feeding themselves
Key specs: 100% polyester with a waterproof PU coating; full sleeves; back ties; front pocket; 6–24 months; machine or hand wash, hang dry (per Bumkins)
A sleeved bib protects the whole outfit, not just the chest, which matters when yogurt goes on the elbows. A 1-year-old has a year of wear left in the 6–24 month sizing.
Pros
– Fewer outfit changes after meals
– Works with any chair or table
Cons
– Bumkins recommends hang drying, so it isn’t a toss-in-the-dryer item
– Ties take a few seconds longer than a snap closure
Skip it if: the family already has a drawer full of bibs.
Gift it with: the ezpz Mini Mat, for a complete “first meals” set.
ezpz Mini Mat: best for self-feeding
Best for: toddlers who push, flip or throw their plate
Key specs: one-piece silicone plate and placemat; suctions to the surface; three sections; dishwasher and microwave safe; made for 12 months+; comes in a reusable travel bag (per ezpz)
Because the whole mat grips the surface, it’s much harder for a toddler to tip over. ezpz says the Mini Mat fits most high chair trays, but not all. For example, it recommends Stokke-specific products for the Tripp Trapp. If you don’t know the family’s tray, ask first or pick another gift.
Pros
– Cuts down on flipped plates
– Dishwasher safe, with a travel bag for restaurants
Cons
– Doesn’t fit every high chair tray
– ezpz advises against cutting the mat to fit a smaller tray
Skip it if: you can’t confirm it fits the family’s tray.
Gift it with: the Bumkins Sleeved Bib.
Munchkin Miracle 360 Sippy Cup: best first cup
Best for: families moving from bottles toward an open cup
Key specs: 10 oz; spoutless 360° drinking edge; seals when your child stops drinking; three pieces (cup, collar, valve); 12 months+; 2-pack (per Munchkin)
The Miracle 360 lets a toddler drink from any point on the rim, like a regular cup, but the valve closes when they stop sipping. That makes it a handy middle step for the car or the diaper bag. Munchkin’s instructions say to use it only with adult supervision, keep hot drinks out of it, and not let your child walk or run while carrying it. The valve isn’t a teether.
It’s a good stocking stuffer, and a 2-pack means one can be in the wash while the other is in use.
Pros
– Few parts, with no straws to scrub
– 2-pack gives you a spare
Cons
– Cold or room-temperature drinks only: Munchkin says not to microwave, boil or sterilize it, or use it with hot, carbonated or pulpy drinks
– Some toddlers need time to learn to sip from the rim
Skip it if: the family is happy with a straw cup.
Gift it with: the ezpz Mini Mat.
Gifts that grow with them (bigger gifts)
Chicco Bento Booster 3-in-1: best gift that grows with them
Best for: small homes that want one seat for the toddler years
Key specs: booster, floor seat and toddler chair in one; 3-point harness; top-rack dishwasher-safe tray; folds to about 19.5 x 14 x 4.5 in; 5.5 lb; 6 months up to 50 lb (per Chicco)
This is the most “useful for years” gift here: a booster for the family table, a low floor seat, and later a small chair once the harness and tray come off. Because it folds flat, it’s a strong pick for apartments where a full-size high chair would take over the kitchen. (Short on space? See our hook-on high chairs for small spaces.)
Worth knowing: the harness is spot-clean only (Chicco says not to machine wash it), so this is a wipe-down seat rather than a throw-in-the-wash one.
Pros
– Three uses in one product, up to 50 lb
– Folds with the tray attached
Cons
– The tray is snack-sized; the seat is really designed to bring your toddler up to the family table
– Bigger than the other gifts here, so check the family wants one
Skip it if: the family already has a high chair they love.
Gift it with: the Bumkins Sleeved Bib.
Bright Starts Pop ‘N Sit Portable Booster: best for grandparents’ house
Best for: grandparents, relatives and families who travel
Key specs: straps to an adult chair; 3-point harness; removable tray, dishwasher safe (top rack); machine-washable seat pad; folds to about 5 x 15 in; carry bag with shoulder strap; 6 months to 3 years or up to 33 lb (per Bright Starts)
It gives grandparents a place to seat a grandchild at meals without storing a full high chair. With the tray on, it’s a chair-top feeding seat; with the tray off, it’s a toddler booster at the family table.
It folds into its own bag for restaurants and holiday visits. The manual calls for an adult chair with a seat at least 13.8 in wide and deep and a back at least 10 in tall, so check the grandparents’ dining chairs first.
Pros
– Folds small into a carry bag
– Dishwasher-safe tray and machine-washable seat pad (per Bright Starts)
Cons
– The 33 lb limit means it’s outgrown sooner than the Chicco Bento (50 lb)
– Bright Starts’ manual says to always use the harness and both chair straps (the tray isn’t designed to hold the child in), and never to use it on a stool, bench, or swivel or rocking chair
Skip it if: the family wants one seat to last well past age 3. Choose the Chicco Bento.
Gift it with: the Munchkin Miracle 360 Sippy Cup.
A note on safety (age labels, no small parts)
- Follow the age label, and supervise meals. The AAP advises following packaging age guidance, which reflects choking hazards, and having young children sit down to eat with an adult watching (AAP / HealthyChildren.org).
- Avoid small parts for under-3s. Federal rules ban small parts in toys and other products made for children under 3 (16 CFR 1501), and CPSC advises keeping small balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than 3. It also recommends keeping deflated balloons away from children under 8 and throwing away plastic wrap right after gifts are opened (CPSC).
- Skip button batteries. Coin and button batteries are a serious hazard if swallowed. The AAP lists them among household choking risks (AAP / HealthyChildren.org), and a federal rule called Reese’s Law now requires secure battery compartments and warnings on products that use them (CPSC). None of the picks here use batteries.
- Bibs: take the bib off after the meal. Don’t let a child nap or play unsupervised in one, because the ties go around the neck.
- Seats and boosters: always use the harness, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and weight limits, and only attach a booster to a sturdy adult chair as the manual describes.
- Check for recalls before buying or using anything second-hand: CPSC recalls. Report hazards at SaferProducts.gov, and register seats with the manufacturer.

FAQ
What do you buy a 1-year-old who has everything?
Something they’ll use every day: a sleeved bib, a suction plate, a first cup or a folding booster seat. Ask the parents what they’re missing to avoid duplicates.
Is a booster seat a good gift for a 1-year-old?
It can be, especially for grandparents or families short on space. Check the age and weight range, confirm the family doesn’t already own one, and always use the harness.
What should you avoid giving a 1-year-old?
Anything with small parts, balloons or button batteries, or not labeled for their age. Remove ribbons and plastic wrap right after opening.
Final thoughts
For the most years of use, give the Chicco Bento Booster 3-in-1. For a smaller gift, the Bumkins Sleeved Bib is hard to get wrong.
